Work place deaths report – 163 killed in July

A shocking 163 deaths of workers have been recorded on work sites in Turkey last month alone putting the number of total fatalities this year at more than 1000, Gazete Karinca reported on Friday.

In its monthly report published on Friday, the Health and Safety Labour Watch (ISIG), a non-governmental worker rights organization,  announced that 70 migrants or refugees were killed in the occupational works, indicating an increase on a yearly basis.

July’s death toll of 163 included six migrants or refugees, according to the report.

The ISIG defines the deaths in workplace accidents as murder, as it sees them as avoidable.

The report said six children and 10 female workers were killed at work in July.

The fatal work accidents occurred mostly in the agricultural, construction and transportation sectors.

The country has been at the center of criticism over its poor workplace safety record and its failure to prevent occupational accidents.

Nearly 1.7 million workers have been involved in workplace accidents between 2003 and 2017 in Turkey, while almost 17,000 others died over the same period, according to a 2018 report by Gamze Akkus Ilgezdi, deputy chair of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP).

The deadliest work accident occurred on May 13, 2014, in the western district of Soma, killing 301 coal miners.
