769 of 848 dormitories that were closed after a coup attempt in July 2016 over alleged Gulen links, have been transferred to pro-government religious groups over the past three years, according to the T24 news portal.
In resposse to a parliamentary inquiry submitted by Republican People’s Party (CHP) İstanbul deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu, Education Minister Ziya Selçuk stated that there were a total of 2,642 dorms owned by associations across Turkey, while 393 dorms owned by private-foundations.
“848 dorms across Turkey has so far been closed over links to FETÖ terrorist organization. 79 of them were transfered to the Education Ministry and are run by the state-run Higher Education Credit and Hostels Institution (KYK),” Selçuk noted.
FETO is a derogatory term coined by ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) to refer to the Gülen group, accused of mounting a botched coup attempt in 2016.
The group denies any involvement in the attempt.
In the aftermath of a failed coup, hundreds of schools, dormitories and foundations linked to the Gülen movement were closed down by the Turkish government. For details, see https://turkeypurge.com/purge-in-numbers-2.
