Opposition deputy claims intel agent pretending to be prison guard tortures inmates

Sezgin Tanrıkulu, a deputy from Turkey’s main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), has claimed that a National Intelligence Organization (MİT) agent who pretends to a prison guard in İstanbul’s notorious Silivri Prison has been committing acts of torture there, according to Turkish media reports.

Tanrıkulu based his claim on the statements of some inmates in Silivri Prison as well as of people who have been released from the prison.

The opposition deputy submitted a parliamentary question to the Speaker’s Office directed at Justice Minister Abdulhamit Gül.

In the parliamentary question Tanrıkulu asks about the alleged MİT agent in Silivri, who is known as “torturer Emin” among the inmates.

Tanrıkulu also asked about claims suggesting that criminal complaints filed against this person by inmates who say they have been subjected to acts of torture by him in Silivri have not been processed by the relevant prosecutor’s office or the administration of the prison

“Are the claims true that suggest that there are MİT agents in prisons who pretend to be prison guards? What is the explanation for the lack of any judicial action against this person in Silivri? Is it true that this person commits acts of torture in the areas of Silivri where there are no cameras?” Tanrıkulu asked.

Silivri Prison hosts many government critics who have been jailed in a massive purge launched by the Turkish government in the aftermath of a failed coup in July 2016.
