Turkey’s Constitutional Court has cancelled a controversial article in a law that went into effect during a state of emergency requiring individuals to undergo a security investigation before they are employed by the state, according to Turkish media reports.
Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) pressed ahead with many controversial laws and decrees in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt on July 15, 2016.
The government declared a state of emergency following the coup attempt that remained in effect for two years and granted extraordinary powers to itself.
The security investigation requirement was criticized for lacking guidance as to how the investigations would be carried out and that it would require accessing the applicant’s personal information and would therefore violate privacy laws.
