Boston Celtics center Enes Kanter thanked Canadian Minister Justin Trudeau and his government in a tweet on Wednesday for issuing him a visa to enter Canada to play in the NBA’s first Christmas game in Toronto.
Kanter, an outspoken critic of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government, has not traveled outside the United States for several years. Kanter has said his passport was revoked by the Turkish government in 2017.
“Can’t express my gratitude to the Canadian people, government and @JustinTrudeau for welcoming me to Canada. What an amazing, warm and respectful country. Thanks for accepting Turkish refugees into Canada as they escape #DictatorErdogan ‘s oppression!” Kanter tweeted.

Kanter, 27, is averaging 7.8 points and 7.3 rebounds for the Celtics this season.
