Turkey is the second-worst country in terms of social justice after it was ranked 40th out of 41 countries which are members of the European Union (EU) and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).
With a score of 4.86, Turkey came close to last in the SJI 40th, surpassing only Mexico.
Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Finland, and Sweden respectively earned a place at the top of the index.
The 2019 Social Justice Index (SJI) published annually by Germany’s Bertelsmann Stiftung Foundation, analyzes 46 criteria grouped under six categories namely economic, social and environmental policies plus the quality of democracy, executive capacity and executive accountability.
The index ranked Turkey 31st in poverty prevention, 41st in access to equal education, 37th in access to the labor market, 39th in inclusion in social life and non-discrimination, 18th in intergenerational justice and 36th in health.
According to the overall performance of the country, Turkey is among the countries most urgently in need of policy reforms.
The country scored below the average in five of the six dimensions while placing among the bottom 10 countries in four dimensions.
The only dimensions in which Turkey showed progress in a 10-year period are in social inclusion/non-discrimination and health, the index said.
Turkey has the least educated population in the study, with its education system remaining the least equitable among the countries.
In terms of education system outcomes, many Turkish students are not receiving quality education based on the fact that the share of 15-year-old students scoring below the baseline level of proficiency on PISA (31.2%) is alarmingly high, ranking 40th.
