Turkish police detain women protesting against gender-based violence in capital

Turkish police detained nearly ten women in the capital Ankara during a protest against male violence against women, Birgun daily reported on Thursday.

The police on Thursday intervened in the women’s protest while they were staging a rendition of the dance performance created by the Chilean feminist group Las Tesis to a feminist protest song titled A rapist in your path.

Video footage released by the Birgun daily shows police officers using shields to prevent female protestors from staging Thursday’s dance performance organized by women organizations to condemn gender-based violence.

The women were reportedly taken into custody for violating  Law 2911 on Meetings and Demonstrations and degrading Turkish Nation, State of Turkish Republic, the Organs and Institutions of the State, as stated in  Article 301 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK).

Last week Turkish police intervened in a similar protest by female protestors in Istanbul and briefly detained seven women, including the We Will End Femicide Platform’s secretary-general Fidan Ataselim and Aysen Ece Kavas, a member of the Women’s Assembly.

The Las Tesis feminist group’s dance performance, which was initially staged in front of Chile’s ministry for women’s rights and gender equality on November 25, has gradually spread to many other countries of the world.

The performance involves blindfolded women dancing to the feminist anthem entitled A rapist in your way, which blames patriarchy for the violence committed against women and the subsequent victim-shaming women face from society.

“It’s femicide. Impunity for the killer. It’s disappearance. It’s rape. And the fault wasn’t mine, not where I was, not how I dressed. The rapist is you. It’s the cops, the judges, the state, the president. The oppressive state is a rapist,” the song emphasizes.

Although Turkey became the first state to sign and ratify a Council of Europe convention on preventing domestic violence in 2011, cases of femicide and violence against women are still highly prevalent in the country.

According to data from the We Will End Femicide Platform, some 405 women were killed by men in Turkey since the start of 2019, which is more than the 402 cases of femicide recorded last year.
