Two people working in a chrome mine in Turkey’s northwestern Bursa province have died within two days due to workplace accidents the T24 news portal reported on Sunday.
One of the miners working in Bursa’s Harmancik district, Seydi Coskunca, reportedly died while going down to the mine for his day shift on Sunday.
The T24 said that Coskunca was killed in the Harmancik State Hospital where he was admitted after a water pipe in the elevator he was taking down to the mine broke off and hit him on the head.
Yasar Cekel, another worker from the same chrome mine, reportedly died by falling down an empty elevator shaft the previous day.
The local team of gendarmeries has launched an extensive investigation into the successive deaths of the two miners.
According to a recent report issued by Turkey’s Health and Safety Labor Watch (ISIG), at least 1,606 people in the country have died in work-related accidents in the first 11 months of 2019.
The report further stated that a total of 351 workers in Turkey have also committed suicide over the past six years due to harsh working conditions.
Referring to the data received from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), the report also noted that a total of 4481 people in Turkey have committed suicide over financial difficulties since the ruling AK Party (AKP) government came to power in 2002.
ISIG, a network organization initiated in Istanbul in 2001, is made up of workers and their families from various industries and professions.
The organization defines certain worker deaths in Turkey as “murders because of work” rather than “work accidents” with the awareness that all workplace accidents and occupational illnesses are preventable.
