A plane skidded off the runway at İstanbul’s Sabiha Gökçen Airport on Wednesday, crashing into a field and breaking into pieces, The Associated Press reported on Wednesday.
Passengers were seen evacuating through cracks in the plane, and authorities said some had been injured.
Television footage shows serious damage to the fuselage, which appears to have broken into three pieces. NTV television reported that the plane caught fire after skidding but said it had been extinguished.
The plane, belonging to Pegagus Airlines, arrived from the city of İzmir, NTV reported.
The Transportation Ministry said it was carrying 177 passengers on board but that no one has been killed in what it called a “rough landing.”
According to flight tracking website Flightradar24, the plane is a Boeing 737.
NTV quoted Transportation Minister Mehmet Cahit Turhan as saying some passengers were injured. He said emergency crews were still evacuating some passengers from the wreck but that most of them got out on their own.
According to NTV the airport has been shut down and all planes bound for it have been diverted to İstanbul Airport in the city’s north.
A similar incident took place on Jan. 7 with no casualties.
