İdris Sayılğan, a journalist for the Mezopotamya news agency, was arrested by a Turkish court after he arrived in the border province of Edirne to report on a huge number of migrants attempting to cross the border into Greece, the Deutsche Welle Turkish service reported.
A number of other reporters, including two from Kurdish Rudaw TV, were also detained by Turkish police, according to Turkish media reports.
Sayılğan, who used to work for the now-closed Dicle news agency, was sentenced to eight years, three months for membership in a terrorist organization in November but released pending appeal.
The court said the reason for the arrest was that Sayılğan presented a flight risk.
The latest migrant surge at the Greek border follows Turkey’s decision to stop enforcing a 2016 agreement with the European Union whereby it prevented migrants from entering the bloc in return for billions of euros in aid.
