Savaş was a psychiatry professor at Gaziantep University. He was fired from his job by a decree issued by the Turkish government in the aftermath of the 2016 coup attempt. The purge-victim professor was later arrested over alleged links to the Gülen movement, which is accused of orchestrating the failed coup. After spending several months in prison, he was released in November 2016 due to a cancer diagnosis.
Savaş came to public attention last year after Turkish authorities cancelled his passport in an attempt to deny him a treatment abroad.
Although he was later allowed to travel abroad, the late treatment yielded no positive results.
