The alleged attempted rape of a 13-year old girl by a Turkish army sergeant in Turkey’s southeastern city of Sirnak sparked protests in the city on Tuesday and Wednesday, the Mezopotamya Agency reported.
The incident happened at around 11 p.m. on Tuesday night in a housing estate in the city center and the soldier was caught by people who heard the girl screaming, MA reported.
Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) MP Nuran Imir, eyewitnesses caught specialist sergeant A.A. in the act.
“The eyewitnesses also confirmed the [sexual] abuse incident. The judiciary should do what is necessary urgently,” she posted on her Twitter account.
The prosecutor’s office detained A.A., a sergeant from the Turkish Armed Forces after he was handed over to police by those who had gone to the girl’s rescue.
However, the detention order was for the disturbance in the area because the sergeant had exercised threatening behavior with a gun.
The Sirnak Governor’s Office released a statement on Wednesday, saying that a public official named A.A. was taken into custody after disturbing the people around him.
The person was drunk during the incident, the statement added.
A.A. has been suspended from duty, the governor’s office noted.
In his testimony, A.A. rejected the allegations of child abuse and stated that he was drunk.
People shared their resentment over the authorities’ handling of the incident on Twitter under the “Don’t be silent, Sirnak” (#SusmaSirnak) hashtag.
A group of people also staged a protest in the city center on Wednesday.
The Sirnak Bar Association stated that it worked hard to follow up on the incident to see the victim’s statement, witness testimonies, and ensure that camera footage is lawfully taken into consideration in the investigation.
