The number of people who lost their lives in a powerful earthquake that hit the Turkish western of İzmir on Friday, has risen to 83, according to a Turkish minister.
Turkish Environment and Urbanization Minister Murat Kurum who spoke along with two other ministers at Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD) Coordination Center in İzmir on Monday, noted that a total of 962 other people were injured in the quake, 743 of whom have already been released from hospital.
“The treatment of 219 [injured] people continues while nine of them are in the intensive care unit,” he added.
Friday’s quake was centered in the Aegean northeast of the Greek island of Samos. There was some debate over the magnitude of the earthquake. While the US Geological Survey rated it 7.0, the İstanbul’s Kandilli Institute put it at 6.9 and AFAD said it measured 6.6.
Turkey is crisscrossed by fault lines and is prone to earthquakes. In 1999, two powerful quakes killed some 18,000 people in northwestern Turkey.
