An indictment prepared by an Ankara prosecutor is seeking up to 15 years in prison for the former rector of Ankara’s Gazi University, Süleyman Büyükberber, due to their alleged links to the Gülen group, which the Turkish government blames for a failed coup in 2016. The group denies any involvement.
According to the Hurriyet news portal, Büyükberber is accused by the prosecutor of “hiring at least 190 employees that are believed to have links to the Gulen group.”
The purge-victim rector has been in prison since August 2016.
Turkish government accuses Gulenists of masterminding the July 15, 2016 failed coup while the group denies involvement. Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu said at least 510,000 people, including thousands of academics, have been detained over Gulen links since the summer of 2016.
