A Turkish court has ruled to place Metin Gürcan, a politician from the Democracy and Progress Party (DEVA), in pre-trial detention on accusations of “political and military espionage,” the Hurriyet daily news reported.
According to the report, Gürcan denied the espionage accusations, saying that he had been offering consultancy services to individuals and institutions on demand since 2019, regarding Turkey and neighboring countries. He also said that he regularly met with diplomats in Ankara and offered his analyses and received money for this service.
Gürcan is a former member of the Turkish military, and is one of the co-founders of the DEVA Party led by Ali Babacan, a former deputy prime minister from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
