A mother took her 5-year-old son to prison with her after being jailed over alleged links to the Gulen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement.
According to journalist Sevinç Özarslan, Emine Kul, a Turkish woman from İzmir province, was sent to prison October 24. Since her husband has also been in prison over similar charges, their son, Murat, had nowhere else to go but to join his mother in prison as well.
“Another kid has just entered prison. Emine Kul, whose husband has been in prison for over three years, was sent to İzmir Şakran prison on October 24. Murat, the youngest of their three kids aged 5, 11 and 14, has also been in prison with his mother for 10 days,” Özarslan reported.
Since the coup attempt, followers of the Gülen movement have been subjected to a massive crackdown, with the Turkish government and pro-government media outlets demonizing its members.
In addition to the thousands who were jailed, scores of other Gülen movement followers had to flee Turkey to avoid the government crackdown.
