Gürbüz Dönmez, an 80-year-old Turkish man who suffers from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), has been held in an İzmir prison since September 2017 over alleged links to the Gulen group.
The group is accused by the Turkish government of masterminding a coup attempt in July 2016. It denies any involvement.
According to the Bold news portal, Dönmez was sentenced to 10 years in prison over membership to the group and has been staying at the Şakran prison in İzmir province.
The 80-year-old man reportedly suffers from a series of health problems, including advanced COPD, hernia and coronary artery disease.
Despite his ever-deteriorating health conditions, a medical report issued by the İzmir University’s training and research hospital claims that he is fit to remain in prison.
