Four journalists from the now-closed Taraf daily have been sentenced to lengthy prison sentences for “publishing state secrets” in their 2010 reporting on an alleged war plan.
Mehmet Baransu, an outspoken critic of the AKP government and the former Taraf reporter, was given 13 years in prison while Ahmet Altan, the daily’s editor in chief, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison. Baransu has been behind bars since March 2015.
Yasemin Congar and Yıldıray Oğur were also sentenced to three years and four months in prison.
A Twitter troll named Tuncay Opcin is also a suspect in the case, but he is currently at large.
The Taraf daily, which published extensive reports that angered both Turkey’s military and the government, was among the hundreds of media outlets which were closed down by the government during a state of emergency after the coup attempt.
