At least 957 migrants, including hundreds of women and children, were pushed back by Greek border guards between March 2020 and September 2021, according to Turkish Journalist Sevinç Özarslan.
The number, however, is so much higher, according to a report by the Border Violence Monitoring Network (BVMN). At least 6,230 pushbacks by Greece took place between January 2020 and May 2021.
Greece has been in the throes of Europe’s biggest migration crisis since 2015, when more than a million asylum seekers, mainly Syrians, streamed into neighboring Turkey, making the crossing into Greece and on to other parts of Europe.
Since the failed coup attempt in Turkey in 2016, thousands of Turkish citizens have fled Turkey via illegal means to avoid persecution over trumped-up terror, coup charges.
