116 media outlets closed down since July 2016: deputy prime minister

A total of 116 media outlets have been closed down with decrees issued by the Turkish government since a coup attempt on July 15, 2016.

Last week, main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) İstanbul deputy Sezgin Tanrıkulu submitted a parliamentary question to Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, asking the total number of the media outlets shut by the Turkish government.

In response to the question, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Hakan Çavuşoğlu said on Wednesday, six news agencies, 18 TV stations, 22 radio stations, 50 newspapers and 20 magazines have been forcibly shut down.

Majority of these media outlets were the property of the Gülen movement, which is accused by the government of masterminding the coup attempt.

The movement denies any involvement.

Also, many pro-Kurdish and pro-Alevi outlets have forcibly been shut down by the government.
