Court rules to continue detention of HDP’s newly elected deputy

The Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court has ruled for a continuation of the detention of Leyla Güven, a newly elected Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) deputy, upon an objection filed by the prosecutor to the decision of the Diyarbakır 9th High Criminal Court to release her after the election, the Evrensel daily reported on Friday.

Güven, also the co-chair of the Democratic Society Congress (DTK), has been in pretrial detention since January due to another investigation launched over remarks concerning a Turkish military operation in the Afrin region of northern Syria.

The HDP had nominated Güven as a member of parliament from Hakkari province in the elections on June 24.

After Güven won the right to become a deputy, her lawyer, Reyhan Yalçındağ, applied to the court for her release. Despite the initial decision to approve her release, the prosecutor appealed to another court to keep her in jail.

Republican People’s Party (CHP) deputy Enis Berberoğlu, who has been in jail since June 2017, also was re-elected on June 24.

CHP deputy and Berberoğlu’s former lawyer Turan Aydoğan said they would apply to the court for release after they receive the parliamentary member mandate following the Supreme Election Board’s announcement of the official results.
