An opposition party member detained for reacting to comments made by Interior Minister Soylu’s terror accusations

By merely reacting to comments made Suleyman Soylu, Turkey’s Interior Minister, a member of an opposition party has been detained.

Soylu had accused the Felicity Party (SP) of promoting terrorism during a rally in Istanbul.

Aykut Erdogdu, an MP for the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) claimed on Sunday an SP member was detained after he reacted to Soylu’s terror accusations, targeting the party and its chairman, Temel Karamollaoglu.

During a meeting in Istanbul’s Uskudar district on Sunday, Soylu accused Karamollaoglu along with Good Party (lYI) leader, Meral Aksener, of aligning with the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his cronies’ political discourse equates HDP with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged an armed insurgency in southeastern Turkey for decades.

“If our government loses power after the local elections, our governors and district governors in Turkey’s east and southeast regions will not be able to walk freely in the streets,” Soylu claimed.

“Those who paved the way for this situation are SP chairman Temel Karamollaoglu, Good Party leader Meral Aksener, FETO, PKK and so-called deputies of HDP,” he added, aligning the opposition with terrorist organizations.

FETO is a term created by Turkey’s government after July 15 coup attempt to classify Gulen Movement. Erdogan accuses Fethullah Gulen, a self-exiled Turkish cleric in the U.S, of masterminding the coup attempt although the latter strongly denies accusations.

Yıldıray Camlıca, Felicity Party Uskudar district board member, reacted to Soylu’s accusation, saying: “You’re lying, may God damn those who supported PKK.”

After Camlıca’s reaction to his accusations, Soylu started yelling at him, saying that Karamollaoglu “threw Turkey under the bus,” when he joined the Nation Alliance, formed by four opposition parties to rival pro-government People’s Alliance, during general elections in June 2018.

“Felicity Party threw this country under the bus. Get out of here, you tactless! You’re shameless for going out in public,” Soylu said.

Camlica was detained by the police on insult charges and taken to Uskudar district police department for questioning.

“I reacted to Soylu because he aligned Felicity Party with PKK,” he said in the questioning. Stating he did not insult Soylu, Camlıca added: “I only said ‘May God damn us if we collaborated with PKK.’”

Camlica also said he will file a complaint against minister Soylu for insulting Felicity Party.

Reacting to the incident on Twitter, CHP MP Aydogdu said: “This is the interior minister, in charge of the country’s security. He slanders Felicity Party. A pro-Felicity Party citizen reacts. First, he tells him off with a microphone in his hand. Then the citizen is being detained. Consider the situation of the country, then make your decision [about the upcoming local elections].”
