A Turkish man who was left disabled after being injured in the bloody Gezi Park protest six years ago has applied to the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) in pursuit of justice.
Aydin Aydogan said that he couldn’t get justice in Turkey for the past six years, despite all his efforts and clear evidence which shows that a policeman fired a teargas canister at him. The attack left him disabled.
Aydogan who filed a complaint against Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said the domestic justice system has collapsed.
Erdogan has described the nationwide protests as a coup attempt by foreign powers and labeled all Gezi Park protestors terrorists.
Since then Turkish authorities are seeking life sentences for 16 activists who participated in the protests.
Aydogan said he has no other alternatives left after Turkey’s Constitutional Court rejected his complaint. He said he had been detained and threatened by Turkish police following his complaint in the domestic courts.
“A positive ruling from the ECHR would prove the innocence and legitimacy of the 2013 protests,” Aydoğan told the Turkish Arti Gercek news portal.
He said if the ECHR ruled in his favor the decision will help others who suffered during the Gezi protests to also find justice.
Aydin Aydogan wounded in the left foot by a gas canister on 11 June 2013 and spent one month in a hospital. “Whenever I go to the judicial complex, I am arrested and beaten up by Turkish police. My claims for damages against the police and ministries have been rejected. I was subjected to swearing and abuse. I was beaten,” Aydogan told Cumhuriyet daily on 4 March last year.
The Gezi protests started when a small group contested the urban development plan for Istanbul’s Taksim Gezi Park. The protest spread across the country with protestors besieging many government institutions.
Turkish police intervention in the Gezi Park protests left eight people dead and about 8000 injured.
The Gezi Park protests which started as an environmental movement evolved into a riot against the increased authoritarianism of Erdogan’s rule.
