Police in the Netherlands are searching for a Turkish national who they suspect opened fire on a tram, leaving at least three dead and several wounded, in Utrecht on Monday.
“The police are asking you to look out for 37-year-old [Gökman] Tanis [born in Turkey] associated with the incident this morning,” the Utrecht police tweeted.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte broke off a morning meeting of coalition parties to be briefed on the incident. He described the developments as “very disturbing news,” according to the Dutch News website.
Asked about a possible terrorist motive, he replied, “We will investigate that thoroughly, but I am extremely concerned.”
A Turkish businessman living in Utrecht told BBC Turkish service that Tanış had been arrested over ties to the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorist group and later released. Tanış was also reportedly fought in Chechnya with Islamist militants.
On Friday a far right terrorist attacked a mosque in New Zealand killing 50 people.
