Turkey’s President Tayyip Erdogan displayed graphic video footage of the shooting during an election rally held in the Thracian city of Tekirdag on Saturday, which occurred at two mosques in New Zealand last week.
The perpetrator of the mosque attack live-streamed the attack on Facebook as he shot 49 people attending a Friday prayer.
Erdogan played fragments of the video footage at election rallies while equating statements made by a Turkish opposition leader, likening his opponent to Australian senator Fraser Anning, who blamed Muslim immigration for the attacks.
According to the New York Times, the attacker has been identified as Brenton Tarrant, a 28-year-old Australian who posted a 78-page manifesto before the attack, stating that Muslims should be driven out of the part of Turkey that lies west of the Bosporus.
Referring to the manifesto, Erdogan lambasted the shooter during the rally. “He gabs that they will come to Istanbul and will tear down all the minarets and mosques. Rascal! What does New Zealand have to do with Turkey? How can a killer at the bottom of the world act with so much malice against Muslims and Turks?”
Footage of the attack, along with excerpts from the manifesto of the attacker, was put on display for the crowds at Erdogan’s rallies. The attacker’s views on the Hagia Sophia were also shown together with the latest European Parliament motion to suspend the accession talks with Turkey, which opposed the attempts to convert the museum into a mosque.
Social Media platforms, including YouTube, Vimeo, and Facebook, have been working non-stop to remove the footage of the attack. Facebook claimed to have removed 1.5 million videos of the attack, including edited versions of the video that did not show graphic content.
