Pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) said at least 64 members were detained in less than 24 hours before the election.
31 of them were remanded in prison pending trial, a statement by an HDP parliamentarian noted..
The number of people detained since the party’s election campaign started stands at 713, HDP statement read without elaborating on the specific timeline.
The HDP has been one of the main targets of Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) since a coup attempt in July 2016, following which the government launched a massive crackdown on its opponents under the pretext of an anti-coup fight. According to an HDP report released in December, 16 former deputies including the party’s former co-chairpersons Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ as well as one current deputy are in currently in jail on terrorism charges.
