People’s Democratic Party (HDP) lawmaker and the mayoral candidate for Ankara’s borough of Çankaya, Filiz Kerestecioğlu, put forward a written parliamentary inquiry to Vice President Fuat Oktay questioning what happened during the 17th Feminist March in Taksim.
Kerestecioğlu asked Oktay what the reasons were behind the Turkish police using excessive
force to break up the crowd and what the motives were behind the government’s polarization of society over such a regular event in the wake of the local elections, Gazete Duvar reported.
According to Kerestecioğlu, Turkish police first blocked the crowd’s path, fired pellets containing tear gas and then brawled the women who were gathered for a regular march. She added that by using polarizing rhetoric, politicians within the ruling party have targeted women who gather against oppression.
In addition to questioning the technicalities of the police intervention, including the number
and rankings of the police officers, places of battle stations, number of riot control vehicles,
used pellets containing tear gas and rubber bullets, Kerestecioğlu also enquired about the
goal of the ruling party officials to use the march as part of an election campaign.
“Why was the seventeenth occasion of the Feminist Night March banned this year even
though no disturbance whatsoever took place during the previous sixteen years? Why does the government create a rift in society by scapegoating, accusing and targeting women while
women’s rights and freedoms, including their right to live, is in peril? Is infringing the Constitution and international agreements, including the European Convention on Human Rights and International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, by barring the women’s march, a departure from being a state of law and proclamation of a new police state?” asked Kerestecioğlu.
