The incomplete transportation system of the new Istanbul Airport paved a path for augmentation in the number of passengers hosted by Sabiha Gokcen Airport.
According to figures from Diken News Agency, the number of passengers who used the Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, situated in the Asian part of Istanbul, hit 2,960 million within the first quarter of the year 2019 – an 18% percent increase when compared with the tally of the last year.
For March, Diken recorded 1,070 million international passengers with a 20% rise, whereas, the total number of passengers of the first 3 months of 2019 was noted to be 8,050 million.
The construction of the mega-project championed by President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Istanbul Airport -costing some $8 billion – had resulted in the death of 55 workers since 2015, based on information delivered by Istanbul Grand Airport (IGA) and General Directorate of State Airports (DHMI).
After the mammoth transfer of Turkish Airlines from the old Ataturk Airport to the Istanbul Airport on April 6, 2019, the new airport inaugurated to function regularly and with a much more engaged schedule.
However, the Chairman of the Board of Turkish Airlines made an announcement after the massive move to the new airport, suggesting that in future passengers would arrive at the Istanbul Airport three hours before their boarding time for international flights and two hours prior to domestic flights.
Reportedly, the intense interest noted to the Sabiha Gokcen International Airport was due to the unfavorable transportation within the new Istanbul Airport and the distance of its location to the city center.
“This is the world’s biggest terminal, and there’s not a train system connecting any of the gates. You have to navigate all 15.5 million square feet by foot, or using the moving sidewalks, of which there aren’t even enough,” says Ben Schalapping, travel consultant, in One Mile At A Time.
