Devlet Bahceli, chairman of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has said that there’s no need for AKP to look for other alliances, Diken news portal reported on Wednesday.
The MHP formed the People’s Alliance with the ruling AK Party (AKP) ahead of last year’s presidential election.
“There’s no need to search for other alliances,” Bahceli said in a statement.
Referring to the claims that AKP kept its distance from MHP in the aftermath of the local election, the nationalist leader fired a salvo at his detractors.
“The people who make those claims are rotten to the core. They are confused and they have troublesome intentions. The main choice of the MHP is to keep the People’s Alliance alive,” he explained.
President Recep Tayyip Erdogan previously said in a tweet: “On matters that concern the survival of our country, we must move all together with 82 million as the Turkey Alliance, putting aside our political differences.”
He was referring to last month’s attack by a mob targeting the main opposition leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu during a soldier’s funeral in Ankara’s Cubuk district.
The written statement by Bahceli followed Erdogan’s “Turkey Alliance” rhetoric which is regarded by MHP as an announcement of a search by AKP for new political allies.
The MHP has come under serious criticism by AKP members with some of them accusing the party of being the main reason for the ruling party’s defeats in some of the largest cities of Turkey in the local election held on March 31.
Bahceli emphasized that the alliance between MHP and AKP is not based on mutual benefits, political calculations or elections.
“The two parties got together on wishes of survival and liberty,” he argued.
Bahceli also announced that MHP is on the same page with AKP regarding the demand to repeat the local election in Istanbul.
“The doubts over the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality elections have not been overcome yet,” he said, adding that the Supreme Electoral Council (YSK) has the final say on the Istanbul votes.
The AKP which relies on its nationalist ally for a parliamentary majority would have to search for new allies in case of a break in its pact with the MHP.
Such a search might be a significant challenge for Erdogan after his harsh criticisms against his opponents, which include claims of supporting terrorism during the campaign for the March election.
