A 47-year-old local journalist in Turkey’s Aydin province, Mustafa Yayla was arrested for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on social media, a charge that carries a sentence of between one and four years.
Media reported Sunday that Yayla was indicted after someone reported him to BIMER (Prime Ministry Communication Centre) three years ago. The journalist was given 11 months and 20 days in jail, a sentence he later appealed.
An appeals court has upheld the local court’s decision since then.
Not notified about the latest court decision, Yayla was detained during a routine police check in Izmir’s Torbali district and sent to prison.
Media said Yayla got married 20 days ago.
The number of investigations launched on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was 20,539 in 2017, Bilgi University Professor Yaman Akdeniz told media earlier. 6,033 of such investigations made it to the courts last year, Akdeniz added.
