Galatasaray, Turkey’s soccer royalty, has for the 22nd time won the Turkish Super League as they defeated Medipol Basaksehir by two goals to one at the Turk Telekom Arena Stadium on Sunday evening in Istanbul.
This was the league’s 61st season, seeing the championship decided a week before the end of the season.
Next’s week match for The Lions in the Spor Toto Süper Lig will be ceremonial as the league will be wrapping up.
Riad Bajic opened the scoring for second-placed Medipol Basaksehir against Galatasaray in the 17th minute. This saw the first half ending 1-0 as Galatasaray were trailing.
The second half saw The Lions recharged and playing excellently, which saw them netting two goals. Galatasaray’s Sofiane Feghouli got the first goal in the 47th minute and Henry Onyekuru ensured victory with the second goal in the 64th minute.
The 2018’s Super League champions, Galatasaray, recorded their 36th game of going undefeated at home. This was one of the closely contested league races in the history of the Turkish Super League, as Galatasaray and Basaksehir both had 63 points. Galatasaray increased the total of its points to 69 after yesterday’s win, while Medipol Basaksehir remained in second place with 66 points.
Galatasaray won the 1999–2000 UEFA Cup competition after defeating Arsenal in the final. The team has now secured direct participation in the UEFA Champions League after winning the 22nd Super League title.
