The body of Mücahit Yılmaz, a Kurdish man who was killled allegedly in clashes with the Turkish army in Diyarbakır on July 21, has not yet been returned to the family on the grounds that he had ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
The body has been held in a hospital morgue for over 37 days.
The PKK is designated as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union as well as Turkey. The 32-year-long conflict, which has claimed more than 40,000 lives, halted in March 2013 as part of a settlement process initiated between the PKK and the Turkish government. However, the PKK ended the cease-fire in the summer of 2015.
