Edirne police briefly detained a 5-month pregnant woman on Thursday over alleged links to the Gülen group, which the government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016. The group denies any involvement.
The woman, named Emine Coşkun was detained with her husband Zafer Coşkun while trying to cross into Greece to seek asylum. They were reportedly pushed back to Turkey by the Greek border authorities.
Upon their return to Turkey, they were detained and taken to a police station.
The woman was reportedly later released after some 48 hours in custody. At time of writing, her husband still remains in police custody.
Coşkun’s father, Arif Yıldırım, said he went to see his daughter in detention. “Her clothes were wet from the Evros River and she was covered in mud, but I’m thankful she’s alive,” he said.
