Navigating Gendered Conflict and Displacement: A Powerful Global Dialogue Amplifies Women’s Voices from Ukraine, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Palestine

New York, NY – [March 20, 2025] – Advocates of Silenced Turkey successfully hosted a a compelling virtual panel discussion on March 19, 2025, titled “Navigating Gendered Conflict and Displacement: Ukraine, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Palestine. The event shed light on the often-overlooked experiences of women living through conflict and displacement.

Focusing on regions deeply impacted by armed conflict and political instability, the panel addressed the compounded challenges women face—including displacement, gender-based violence, limited access to healthcare and education, and the erosion of social support systems. The discussion also highlighted the resilience, leadership, and agency of women as they navigate these overlapping crises.

Speakers emphasized the unique and shared realities faced by women across these four key regions:

Tuana Turkyilmaz, Ward Melville HS:

“Many women in Turkey, especially from minority groups, face serious issues like discrimination, language barriers, and poor access to healthcare. These challenges highlight the urgent need for stronger laws, better healthcare access, and greater protection for women’s rights.”

Esat Dumanli, Hillsborough HS:

“The government’s actions, along with public statements made by the Turkish President and other members of his party, have often contributed to degrading women. These factors have created a situation where women in Turkey face a variety of challenges, from child marriage and limited representation, to societal pressures and a general lack of awareness about gender equality.”

Meryem Akyol, Half Hollow Hills HS East,

“Women in Afghanistan have long been suffering from Gender Based Violence and humans rights violations against them under Taliban rule. However, Afghan women have demonstrated great resilience against these challenges to better their lives and also future generations.”

Mehru Erkisi, Wayne Hills HS:

“The ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia has left women voiceless, exposing them to heightened violence, displacement, and economic hardship. The spouses of women in Ukraine are off to war, leaving them alone with no support system of financial aid. Women all around the world are expected to take care of household maintenance such as the main factors being preparing meals, cleaning, and taking care of their kids, while men are seen as more dominant, which means having hold of monetary assistance.”

Laura Laypanova, Pioneer HS:

“It is common for us to overlook the role of women in war, as we tend to believe that war primarily affects men. However, this perspective fails to recognize the specific challenges that women encounter in conflict zones. Women in Palestine face gender-specific vulnerabilities and systemic barriers, including violence, limited representation, restricted access to education, ethnic disparities, and religious and cultural pressures.”

Yusuf Kaval, Pioneer HS:

“Women in Gaza are facing pressure, discrimination, and lack of medical support as women are not only in charge of their mental health but also their family’s health issues. Women in Gaza leave their homes and are forced to live in overcrowded refugee camps or smaller tents that have no privacy or protection. This leaves them with no safe place to live or sleep, fearing for all of their lives. It’s even harder for them to find food often looking for leftovers from the destruction or trying to sell handmade goods from scraps from the rumble.”

The event served as a powerful reminder that gendered conflict and displacement are not abstract issues

—they are lived realities for millions. Through continued dialogue, collective action, and the elevation of women’s voices, the global community can move toward more inclusive and sustainable responses to conflict.
