On March 11, the documentary “Metamorphosis: Women’s Struggle for Freedom in Turkey” was screened in New York by Advocates of Silenced Turkey (AST). Alongside the screening, a panel discussion and the Exhibition of Silent Screams were held to bring attention to women’s rights violations in Turkey.
A distinguished group of academics, activists, and legal experts from the United States, Romania, Belgium, Denmark, and Canada gathered for this meaningful event, held over an iftar dinner.

ZULEYHA MARY FIKRET

Züleyha Mary Fikret, Columbia Üniversitesi’nde Türk Dili Programı Koordinatörü ve Respect Graduate School’da İslam Teorisi dersleri veren bir akademisyendir. Gösterim sonrası, belgesellerin izleyiciyi derinden etkileyen bir güce sahip olduğunu vurguladı. Özellikle Hacer Yıldız’ın hikayesi, Fikret için büyük bir empati ve öfke kaynağı oldu. In conclusion, she emphasized that such projects contribute to the human journey, which she believes is incredibly valuable.

When asked about a message of hope for the future, she emphasized that the documentary already clearly conveyed its message of hope. She expressed that we must stand up and fight for justice, no matter what. She highlighted that justice is not for one person, but for everyone, and stressed that we must stand for justice for everyone, regardless of differences, whether secular or religious. After the screening, she mentioned that the stories were really tough and added, “I must admit that I was deeply affected when I read the stories. I knew about the politics in Turkey and what was happening there, but watching the stories was a completely different experience.” The thing that affected her the most was seeing the suffering of women and children, who are the most valuable beings in the world. She also added, “What could be worse than this?”. Additionally, she mentioned being deeply impacted by the exhibition showcasing the personal belongings of the deceased or those who suffered.
In her message of hope, she said, “Liberty is not to be taken for granted. It becomes more and more fragile, threatened, and in danger. We have to be aware. Liberty is at risk of disappearing.” and “We need to look at what we should do and protect freedom.”
VONYA WOMACK

Vonya Womack, Refugees Unknown-Stories Untold (RUSU)’nun Yönetici Direktörü ve Villanova Üniversitesi’nde Siyaset Bilimi profesörüdür. Gösterim sonrası, birçok röportaj yaparak, hikayelerdeki benzerlikleri fark ettiğini belirtti. Hikayelerin genelinde aileden ayrı kalındığını, farklı acıların yaşandığını ve sosyal-ekonomik bir soykırımın yapıldığını vurguladı. After the screening, she mentioned that after conducting many interviews, she noticed many similarities in the stories. She emphasized that in the stories, families were separated, different kinds of suffering were experienced, and a socio-economic genocide was taking place. She said that the story of the woman who was raped deeply affected her, because although such suffering is often heard, now people are talking about it more and becoming more aware of these events.
She stated, “I find it brave and powerful to share such a personal story,” and pointed out that when the suffering of women and children is spoken of more openly, more women will share their experiences. As a message of hope for the future, she said, “When women stand together, we are very powerful,” emphasizing the importance of telling stories, and concluded her speech with “Stories matter.”
FATMA YILMAZ

Fatma Yılmaz, Romanya’dan gelen bir feminist araştırmacı, insan hakları aktivisti ve Politika Bilimi Ulusal Okulu öğretim görevlisidir. Gösterim sonrası, yaşadığı duygusal etkilenimi “Gerçekten çok duygulandım, sözün bittiği yer gibi hissettim. 18 Temmuz’da yaşadıklarımı saniye saniye bana hatırlattı. After the screening, she expressed her emotional impact by saying, “I was really moved, it felt like the moment when words fail. It reminded me, second by second, of what I went through on July 18. I can call what happened a tragedy.” We noticed that Yılmaz had difficulty forming sentences during the interview.
She emphasized that she was affected by all the stories, calling them special and important, and said, “We must make sure that the voices of these kinds of suffering are heard and known worldwide.” As a message of hope, she said, “Don’t lose hope in Allah”, adding, “One day, justice will be served, and everyone will understand the truth.” She concluded by saying, “May Allah grant everyone strength and patience.”
CARMEN LONELA NEMES

She stated, “It doesn’t matter where a woman is raped; whether in prison, at home, or on the street, it’s all the same. Rape is an event that deeply affects a person. I don’t think this can ever end, but we must reduce it.” She mentioned that the story of the female journalist deeply touched her, saying, “Because I consider myself a free woman, and I cannot imagine someone taking away my freedom. She stood strong in the face of that freedom.”
As a message of hope, she said, “We must fight,” adding, “Everyone should be zero-tolerant to any form of violence. If this happens, something will change. If we are here tonight, it means something is changing.”
ROCHELLE (SHELLEY) PECK

Rochelle (Shelley) Peck, emekli bir optometrist ve insan hakları savunucusudur. She emphasized the importance of understanding people’s stories by saying, “All women are doing their best to defend their values and represent the best parts of themselves.”
As a message of hope, she said, “Tonight, there are many male viewers here. While watching this film, my hope is that, with men like this in the world, they will think about how they will take responsibility for their daughters, sisters, and wives.”

Despite the trauma she has experienced, I believe she can undergo a metamorphosis, just like a butterfly, through this strength.”
Brack also shared an emotional message of hope: “I pray and hope that they will learn from life and find happiness.”
Lastly, she emphasized the importance of the documentary: “This documentary carries a really important message. It has reached many people, and for that, I truly congratulate them.”
