Advocates of Silenced Turkey, in collaboration with Set Them Free, Embrace Relief and Journalists and Writers Foundation, successfully hosted a panel discussion on March 10, 2025, titled “Beyond Boundaries: Exploring Health, Gender, and Social Marginalization in Conflict and Poverty-Affected Contexts”. The event, held at the Church Center of the United Nations, drew a full house, demonstrating significant interest in the intersecting challenges faced by women and girls in regions affected by conflict and poverty.
Moderated by Sarah Elsakhawy, Embrace Relief Program Director, the panel highlighted the critical need for international collaboration to address health disparities, gender inequality, and systemic injustices. Discussions focused on the impact of conditions like cataracts on marginalized communities, emphasizing the role of humanitarian initiatives and global sisterhood in providing essential support. Attendees explored strategies to amplify global advocacy and humanitarian aid efforts to improve health and social outcomes for women and girls.
Reflections from the panelists:
Dila Yuksel, Pioneer HS:
“Because when we help someone see again, we’re not just changing their world—we’re changing the world around them.”
Hasan Sandir, Rutgers University:
“Cataract doesn’t just cause a loss of vision, but also a loss of much more basic and human needs and no person, no society, and especially no children, women, or girls deserve to live in such conditions.”
Busra Bayram, Ellentown Parkland HS:
“Education is one of the most powerful tools in preventing cataracts, yet it remains one of the most significant gaps in eye health awareness and care.”
Hansa Girdap, Smithtown HSE:
“Imagine going through an entire day, trying to make a living, provide for your family, or attend school, all with an eye condition that makes it extremely hard to see the world around you. Imagine not being able to see the faces of your loved ones or a beautiful sunset. These people cannot see the wonders of the world around them. All of the things in life that we consider simple necessities are luxuries for people in Africa, which is exactly why they need our support.”
Building on this momentum, Advocates of Silenced Turkey and partnering organizations, including Set Them Free and the Journalists and Writers Foundation, are pleased to announce an upcoming virtual panel discussion: “Navigating Gendered Conflict and Displacement: Ukraine, Turkey, Afghanistan, and Palestine”. This event will take place virtually on March 19, 2025, from 4:30 PM to 6:00 PM.
This youth-focused panel will shed light on the multifaceted challenges faced by women in conflict and
post-conflict zones, with a particular focus on displacement, security, and resilience. The discussion will feature the voices of women from Turkey, Ukraine, Palestine, and Afghanistan, highlighting their resilience amid adversity.
These panel discussions, which specifically focus on the experiences of women in conflict zones and aim to amplify their voices, highlight the inspirational and powerful impact of youth engagement in advocacy and social justice.
