A Kurdish activist named Mehmet Serif Süren who reportedly filed an asylum claim in Bosnia to avoid a persecution by the Erdogan government, is at risk of deportation to Turkey by the Bosnian authorities.
According to a series of tweets posted by Süren’s brother, Bilal Süren, he has been in prison in Bosnia since January 1st, 2022.
“My brother #mehmetserifsuren, has been imprisoned in Bosnia and Herzegovina since 10-1-2022. He is a human rights activist and Kurd politician. Defending human rights is not a crime.#bosniaandherzegovina should recognize the right to political asylum. He can’t be returned to Turkey,” Süren tweeted.
The Kurdish man is accused of having links to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
