Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has sued 6,033 people in 2017 over their alleged insults and 2,099 of them have been sentenced by Turkish courts, according to recently announced statistics of Turkish judiciary.
Law professor Yaman Akdeniz, who has shared the latest statistics of the Turkish judiciary on his personal Twitter account on Friday, stated that “The unpreventable ascension of the offense of insulting the President (Turkish Penal Code – TCK Article 299) continues. As you might recall, the President had withdrawn its complaints on July 15. However, despite 1,953 cases were opened in 2015 and 4,187 insult cases opened in 2016, the numbers of lawsuits filed in 2017 has reached 6,033.”
He also stated that the number of the verdicts in the cases related to the alleged insult against President Erdoğan has also increased dramatically. The numbers of verdicts in insult cases filed by President Erdoğan had been 238 in 2015, 884 in 2016 while it has become 2,099 in 2017.
According to data shared by Professor Akdeniz, the number of suspended prison sentences given to those who allegedly insulted President Erdoğan has become 1,660 in 2017, while it was 151 in 2015 and 720 in 2016.
“The total number of cases filed over the charge of insult against Turkish President (TCK 299) was 12,893 between 2010 and 2017, and 12,305 of these cases were opened during the period Erdoğan between 2014-2017,” said Akdeniz.
He also stated that the Turkish courts gave decisions in 5,150 insult cases opened by President Erdoğan and 2,099 of them have been sentenced and only 873 of them were acquitted.
