France’s prestigious “Montluc Resistance and Liberty Award” awarded to Kurdish leader

Jailed Pro-Kurdish People’s Democracy Party (HDP) former co-chairperson Selahattin Demirtaş has received France’s prestigious “Montluc Resistance and Liberty Award”, with his first storybook Seher (twilight).

Seher was released in 2017 when he was in prison in Turkey. Demirtas will also granted an award of 5 thousand Euro.

Turkish Daily Cumhuriyet Newspaper reported that, in the literature category, Demirtas left behind the other well-known names such as Roberto Saviano, Rana Ahmad, Marie Fleur Albecker and Alaa El Aswany.

Beside Demirtas, lawyer and activist M. Robert Badinter, who launched a successful public awareness campaign that led to the abolition of the death penalty in France, in 1981 and Syrian filmmaker Hala Alabdalla were also among those who received awards in the ceremony which was held on February 10.

Demirtas’s storybook previously was nominated for Prix Médicis Etranger, one of the most prestigious literary awards, but his “Twilight” was beaten by Rachel Kushner’s “The Mars Room.”
