More Turkish students drop out of universities as the number increase by a whopping 92%

MORE STUDENTS dropped out of most tertiary education institutions as the prospects of finding jobs are slim and the Turkish economy continues to shed jobs.

Data published by the Turkish Ministry of Education points out that over 92.2% of students dropped out and thus surpassing 408 000.

This is in the 2017-2018 academic period.

According to data shared by the Ministry, 1 million, 115 000 and 530 students had disenrolled or had their enrolments suspended in the past five years.

At the same time, 135 000 students left their university education in the 2013-2014 academic year.

This number increased to 161 000 in the 2014-2015 period, to 197 000 in 2015-2016 and to 212 000 in the 2016-2017 education period.

According to these figures, the number of students who dropped out of university during the 2017-2018 academic year exceeded 408 000 with an increase of 92.2%.

According to Deutsche Welle Turkish, the main reason for most dropouts are financial difficulties.

According to official data shared by Turkey Statistical Institute (TSI), among the six million people who are unemployed, one million and 310 000 are university graduates.

In addition to losing hope of being employed in the future, students who encounter economic hardships during their studies often end up dropping out of school.

In addition, students studying at university departments with reduced employment opportunities have also chosen to dump their education.

The other factor that seems to demotivate most students is the dreaded KPSS exam they have to take before they start working. The exam requires students, across several disciplines, to pass and have a security clearance, which often involves an official investigation into the political leanings of the candidate and immediate family.
