Pentagon spokesman warns Turkey of “grave consequences” on S-400 deal

Acting Pentagon spokesman Charles Summer said on Friday that Turkey’s purchase of the S- 400 missile defense system would result in grave consequences for the country.

When asked what the grave consequences would be, he said that they will not have access to the Patriot and the F-35.

In December, Turkey purchased Patriot defense systems from the United States and, in November, the Pentagon presented a report to the Congress on the delivery of F-35 fighter jets to Turkey.

The United States and several NATO member countries that are part of the F-35 program have concerns regarding Turkey’s S-400 move, citing the vulnerability of sensitive information linked to the F-35 program if it is operated together with S-400 defense systems.

The S-400 air defense system will be delivered to Turkey in the autumn of 2019, according to the Russian Federal Service of Military-Technical Collaboration (FSVTS) chair Dimitry Sugayev.

The air defense system deal between Turkey and Russia, signed in 2017, caused friction between the two NATO allies time and again, with the US expressing its disapproval of the deal at various levels.

Russia and Turkey: from adversaries to strategic partners

In November 2015, Turkey downed a Russian Sukhoi Su-24M attack aircraft, prompting a stern backlash from Russia, which announced wide-ranging economic sanctions against the NATO member country in the wake of the attack.

Turkey issued a formal apology for shooting down the Russian jet in June 2016, and the two countries got closer than ever after the failed 2016 coup. Russia allegedly shared intelligence with Turkey on a coup plot underway before the attempt and the Russian President Vladimir Putin was one of the first leaders to call the Turkish President to express his support.

After the coup bid, Turkey started working closely with Russia and Iran on the Syrian conflict, which is viewed as a U-turn by many analysts considering Turkey was once an implacable enemy of the current Syrian regime and the Syrian President Bashar al- Assad after 2011.

The shift in Turkey’s policy has crystallized in Turkey’s disaccord with its NATO allies on various occasions, such as the Venezuela crisis, with the Muslim-majority NATO member country’s endorsement to the embattled President Nicolas Maduro, in defiance of the staunch US support for the self-proclaimed President Juan Guaido.
