Şerife Sulukan, a physics teacher with a 89 percent disability rating, has been put in pre-trial detention over alleged links to Turkey’s Gulen group, which the Turkish government accuses of masterminding a coup attempt in 2016.
The group denies any involvement.
According to Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), the purge-victim woman has been placed in a solitary confinement at a state prison in Edirne province.
“This woman would die in prison. She is 89 percent disabled. Even such patients are in prison in Turkey. Let the World know about this,” Gergerlioğlu tweeted.
Sulukan’s husband is also in prison over having links to the Gulen group.
There have been frequent cases of suicide among purge victims since the failed coup.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight, as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
