Emine Üzel Ahmadi, a 29-year-old Turkish lawyer who was fired from her job in the aftermath of a failed coup attempt in 2016, committed suicide on Monday, according to Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a lawmaker from the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP).
“Despite having a four-month old baby, she committed suicide yesterday. Who knows what she has been through,” Gergerlioğlu tweeted.
She will be laid to rest in her hometown of Karaman.
She was accused by the Turkish authorities of having links to the Gulen group, accused masterminding the failed coup. The group denies any involvement.
There have been frequent cases of suicide among purge victims since the failed coup.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight, as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
