Kurdish politician Aysel Tuğluk was released from prison late on Thursday night after a medical report confirmed that she was not fit to stay in prison due to dementia, the impaired ability to remember, think, or make decisions that interferes with doing everyday activities.
The 57-year-old woman was arrested in December 2016 and was diagnosed with dementia in February 2021 while behind bars. She was the deputy co-chair of the pro-Kurdish Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) before her arrest in 2016.
She was released from prison on Thursday evening and welcomed by a group of people outside the prison.
