Young woman lashes the perverted ways of a policeman who sexually harassed her during a protest

A VICTIM OF A sex pest policeman has called on the Turkish society to shame the cop, and not leave this entirely to her alone.

Merve Demirel was sexually harassed while being put into a police vehicle by a male police officer during last Saturday’s protest.

Speaking to a news portal, Artigercek, Demirel said she intends filing a complaint against the policeman.

There was a strong reaction on social media as the policeman’s face was caught on camera during the sexual assault.

University student Demirel and her two friends were arrested while reading the media statement on behalf of the Solidarity Association of the Arrested and Convicted People’ Families (TAYAD), for the release of unlawfully arrested people.

Her father is a Gulenist, says Ankara police

In a desperate move to defend one of their own, Turkish police have released a statement calling Demirel’s teacher father a member of the Gulen Movement which was blamed by Ankara for the failed 2016 coup attempt. They said he was dismissed from duty after the coup attempt.

Demirel wears a headscarf – a sensitive issue in Turkey that has been strongly defended by Islamists and the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP). The party accused the young Demirel is being a Gulenist, in a lame attempt to calm down the angry public reaction.

Ankara police said Demirel joined the second protest on Yuksel Street at 18:00 on the same day and will face two charges.

Ankara Bar Association to file a complaint

The Ankara Bar Association said the punishment for sexual harassment is 12 years and the association will file a criminal complaint against the policeman following the public outcry.

“I and my two friends read a press release in the Sakarya Street (in Ankara) on the 24th day of the People’s Lawyers’ hunger strike. Police intervened our protest and sexually harassed me while trying to arrest us,” Demirel said. The young woman criticized those in Turkish society who blame women subjected to sexual assault. She further said sexual assault is torture and the policeman’s act is an improbity. She said women who experienced sexual violence don’t need to feel ashamed as this shame cannot be loaded on women but the rapist, abusive people must feel embarrassed. The lawyer went to call for the immediate stop of showing the video so that Demirel’s dignity is protected.

AKP’s headscarf policy is two-faced

Demirel said AKP rulers carry two-faced politics when it comes to the headscarf issue. “AKP develops its political discourse based on the headscarf and the religion. The ruling party keeps saying women with head scarfs live more comfortable, compared to the 1997 post-modern coup area, which banned head scarfs but the same party never raises any voices against the policeman who sexually harassed me. If AKP protects the headscarf, they are now silent and not starting an investigation into the policeman’s conduct and not suspending him. If AKP is sincere on the headscarf issue, it will take necessary action against this policeman.” Demirel concluded in her interview with Artigercek.
