An Ankara man has reported his daughter to police for insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan only to be informed on over the exact same accusation.
“My daughter, A.T.C., sent the attached email to me on Oct 10, 2018, around 13.05 pm. My daughter A.T.C. insulted our President and myself. I was offended. I kindly request you to take necessary action,” the man, identified only with his initials M.C., filed the complaint, Birgun newspaper reported Monday.
A.T.C. said she was not getting along with her father lately adding that this was the only reason for his father’s complaint.
Yet, M.C. followed the suit after a while and wrote to an Ankara prosecutor the following: “My father, M.C., chatted with his friends on Facebook and insulted Erdogan and some other politicians, and shared his hatred against them. He would frequently insult our President during our family discussions. Hereby, I am complaining about my father M.C.”
A.T.C.’s lawyer Ulku Sahin told Birgun that the accusation of insulting Erdogan is being used as a punishment within families. “This particular example shows us that snitching on others has been a common practice even at family level,” the lawyer said.
The number of investigations launched on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was 20,539 in 2017, Bilgi University Professor Yaman Akdeniz told media earlier. 6,033 of such investigations made it to the courts last year, Akdeniz added.
According to the Turkish Penal Code (TCK) insulting the president carries a sentence of between one and four years.
