Recep Yayla, a Turkish teacher who was fired from his job with a gov’t decree issued following a coup attempt in 2016, reportedly committed a suicide a day after appearing before judge on terror and coup accusations.
According to a tweet posted by a freelance journalist, Fatih Yılmaz, Yayla was scolded by the judge during the trial on November 23 for being a “traitor” due to his alleged links to the Gulen group, which the government accuses of masterminding the failed coup. The group denies any involvement.
Ömer Faruk Gergerlioğlu, a pro-Kurdish deputy, also confirmed Yayla’s death in a tweet he posted late on Saturday night.
Following the coup attempt, the Turkish government launched a massive crackdown on followers of the Gulen group under the pretext of an anti-coup fight, as a result of which more than 150,000 people were removed from state jobs while in excess of 50,000 others were jailed and some 600,000 people have been investigated on allegations of terrorism.
Dozens of people have committed suicide either after they were imprisoned over ties to the group. Some of these suicides have been found to be suspicious.
