Sise Bingol, an 85-year-old Kurdish woman, who despite her dire health, was imprisoned in Turkey in 2017, was released on parole on Monday.
Bingol, who was charged with consciously and willingly aiding a terrorist organization, a term used by Ankara for the banned Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which has waged an armed insurgency in southeastern Turkey for decades, was detained in April 2016.
She spent two and a half months in prison and was subsequently released by the court in June 2016 due to her ill health and pending a trial.
In April 2017, the court of appeal confirmed the local court’s decision and she was arrested again to complete her sentence of four years and two months.
Initially, her lawyers’ petitions and her family’s efforts to have their voices heard fell on deaf ears, making her case an emblematic example of the nature of the post-coup crackdown.
Despite a health report issued by Mus State Hospital underlining her grave health condition, claiming that is was not suitable for her to stay in prison, Turkey’s Forensic Institute’s controversial ruling stated that she could serve her sentence, ignoring the report.
Bingol spent over two years in prison.
