Bumps, bruises, and cuts are what are still being attended to in passengers who were injured after a Turkish Airlines (THY) hit severe turbulence.
THY has expressed its “sadness” over the injured passengers.
The plane was traveling from Istanbul to New York on March 9.
“Twenty eight to thirty injured people were discharged from the hospital and to take precautionary measures, one passenger and one cabin officer are under health surveillance”, said a statement released by THY as it gave an update.
Several media reports said the injured passengers were taken from New York’s John F Kennedy International Airport to local hospitals, mainly for treatment of bumps, cuts and bruises following the incident.
“THY feels great sadness over the incident.”
The statement further read: “The Boeing 777 type aircraft, which had taken off from Istanbul with 326 passengers and 18 crew members, landed safely at the airport at 02.50 am (Turkey time) on Sunday night, after experienced turbulence.
“Twenty eight passengers and two cabin crew were taken to hospitals due to slight injuries as the severe turbulence hit the plane. Turkish Airlines, which always prioritizes the flight and passenger safety, feels great sorrow due to the incident and follows the situation closely to meet all requirements.”
Steve Coleman, a spokesperson for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, said one flight attendant’s leg got broken.
A video recorded by a mobile phone shows passengers panicking when the turbulence hit the plane.
