Unfair coverage by public broadcaster TRT as AKP get more airtime than opposition parties

As local elections are around the corner, a report has now shown how unfair coverage of political parties has been carried out by an influential state media entity.

Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council’s (RTUK) “political news report” released the report that exposes unfair coverage as opposition parties get little airtime.

Ismet Demirdogen, RTUK’s board member shared the report’s finding that shows public broadcaster Turkish Radio Television (TRT) gave 53 hours of coverage to the governing Justice and Development Party (AKP) but only allocated 13 hours for both the main opposition party, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and IYI (GOOD) Party.

The story was covered by Turkish Sozcu newspaper but did not mention what was the coverage time for the pro-Kurdish People’s Democratic Party (HDP).

The newspaper article by Sozcu daily said RTUK’s political coverage report covers the period from February 1 to 28.

RTUK report shows TRT News never covered the criticism against AKP and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), both in an election alliance with AKP for the upcoming local election on March 31, in the live broadcasts, news programs, and political rallies.

TRT’s February bulletins are as follows:

  • AK Party: 49 hours 58 minutes 12 seconds in favor. There’s no unfavorable broadcasting
  • MHP: 3 hours 32 minutes 26 seconds in favorable broadcasting. There’s no unfavorable broadcast.
  • CHP: 5 hours, 47 minutes, 25 seconds in favorable broadcasting. 5 hours 56 minutes 15 seconds unfavourable broadcasting.
  • GOOD Party (IYI): 55 minutes 32 seconds favorable broadcasting. 1 hour 11 minutes 53 seconds unfavorable broadcasting.
  • The Cumhur Alliance (AKP-MHP): 53 hours 30 minutes 38 seconds in favor. No offense.
  • The Alliance of Nations: 6 hours 52 minutes in favor. 7 hours 8 minutes unfavorable broadcasting.

“Here is public broadcasting! TRT violates its own law. RTUK is a passive viewer who avoids responsibility,” Demirdogen lashed out at TRT management. The RTUK report clearly shows how TRT unfairly treats opposition parties as elections are not that far.
